In today’s society, finding and making a connection to the past is more important than ever. Genealogy, or the study of families and the tracing of their lineages and history, is becoming more popular than ever. People from all walks of life are clamoring to find out where they come from and who came before them. Celebrities including Reba McIntire, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paula Deen, Martin Sheen and Sarah Jessica Parker have showcased their delve into the past on NBC’s popular show, “Who Do You Think You Are?” Genealogy can be interesting and fulfilling for people of any age and stature.
A popular question that we get asked here at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery is how do I start my genealogy search? My first suggestion is always talking about it. Ask older relatives (and younger, too!) about your family history. You’d be surprised how many of them will have multiple stories that they can and would love to tell you about the past. With their permission, record them telling the stories or write down what they say. You’ll get to spend time with your loved ones and they’ll proudly tell you stories that may have been passed down over many generations. You won’t regret it!
Check back next week for more tips and advice as I highlight all that the library has to offer in terms of genealogy.
